How to brew · Cold brew only

COLD BREW ONLY

2 teaspoons · 1 cup / 8 fl oz · Cold drinking water · refrigerate at 40°F / 4°C or below · 8–12 hours

  1. Add 2 teaspoons of dry blend to 1 cup / 8 fl oz of cold drinking water in a clean container and cover. Do not use hot water or boil this blend.
  2. Steep only in the refrigerator at 40°F / 4°C or below for 8–12 hours. No sunlight or countertop steeping, even for Sun Tea.
  3. Strain through a paper coffee filter or tightly woven cloth to remove fine sumac hairs. Sweeten after straining if desired; keep refrigerated.

Use a clean, covered container. Steep in the refrigerator at 40°F / 4°C or below, then strain and keep refrigerated.

This ratio is a taste starting point, not a therapeutic dose. The University of Kansas describes an overnight cold infusion with fine cloth filtration; boiling releases bitter tannins. This is the reason for our cold-brew method, not a claim that heated sumac becomes poisonous.

Traditional medicinal uses

Ingredient-by-ingredient botanical history

These dry blends draw on botanical food traditions. Historical use and research on a single ingredient do not establish benefits for this finished cold brew.

Evidence and cautions

One small randomized trial studied hibiscus alone for six weeks, with 65 adults completing the trial. It found a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure than placebo. It did not test these mixed, cold-brewed products or establish clinical benefits for them. Neither blend is a disease treatment or a substitute for prescribed care.

Avoid sumac if you have a known sumac or cashew-family allergy. Check with a clinician before regular use if you take blood-pressure medication or have low blood pressure. Ask a clinician about use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or alongside other medicines. Refrigerate and strain as directed.
