The Sting that Heals: Finding Nettle
Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica). Damp, nutrient-rich soil, often along rivers, edges of woods, and disturbed ground throughout Hampton Roads.
Safety first
Always wear thick leather gloves when harvesting. The sting is neutralized by cooking, drying, or blending.
Where to find it
Damp, nutrient-rich soil, often along rivers, edges of woods, and disturbed ground throughout Hampton Roads.
Identification
Look for opposite, heart-shaped leaves with deeply toothed edges. The stem is square and covered in tiny, stiff hairs (trichomes) that deliver the sting.
Harvest and preparation
Young leaves and tops (harvested before flowering).
Steam or blanch like spinach. Incredible in pestos, soups, or dried for a deeply mineral-rich tea.
